Chapter 12 Question 3

I feel that intercultural communication is necessary for all of us. The reason why I feel this way is due to the fact we need to communicate with other cultures to establish peace and understanding. We cannot stay isolated in our own cultures, believing that our set of norms and standards are superior to other cultures. Let’s take for example the gay culture. Right now they are fighting for there right to be recognized. Currently there are 6 states that allow gay marriage. You might not agree with the gay life style, but in order to keep peace we need to communicate. Both sides of an argument need to communicate, we can’t be one sided and ignore people based on they don’t have the same belief system as you do. When we communicate with people from another culture we grow as humans. We get to experience what some people will never get the experience to. We get to see things from another persons point of view.

  1. Indeed, intercultural communication is essential for all of us! Trenholm (2008) shares this same view: “we can not afford to ignore people from other cultures…nowadays it is impossible to remain isolated from others” (p. 348). I think you did such a fantastic job by using as example the gay culture. In my view, they should not have to struggle to conquer the right of being legally recognized.

I am heterosexual, but I have male gay friends and female lesbian friends. I respect them because this is their choice. I do not think it is nobody else’s business, honestly. And I would go further by saying that some of the most insightful conversations I have ever had were with my homosexual friends. They can be so honest, and to me this stands out above anything else.

Again, we do not share the same belief system, but we are able to respect each other and look at some situations from a totally different perspective. Metaphorically speaking, intercultural communication is a solid bridge that leads to new horizons.
